If you’ve seen an esports competition, chances are that there was a big stage with about 10 gaming PCs, each with a young person behind it wearing a look of intense concentration. The federal government is due to respond to a parliamentary inquiry into online gambling. Last year the inquiry, led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy, recommended phasing out gambling advertising over three years leading to a total ban. But there are reports the government will stop at a partial ban. This could take gambling off social media and stop ads from airing within an hour (before and after) sporting matches. How effective would a partial ban be? History shows it may not be enough. Advertising normalises gambling Advertising is one way industries normalise harmful commodities such as gambling. They…

Screen time is one of the top worries for Australian parents. In a national February 2021 poll by the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, parents rated it as the number-one health issue facing their children. Our previous research also shows parents feel guilty about screens, even though they are all around us. At the same time, guidance on what parents should be doing is confusing. According to the World Health Organization and the Australian government, young children’s screen time should be limited to no more than one hour per day for two- to five-year-olds, while children under two shouldn’t be exposed…

PAYETTE, ID – The U.S. Department of Labor recovered $268,417 in back wages and liquidated damages for 76 workers after finding the employer housed them in substandard conditions and wrongly exempted many of them from overtime in violation of federal regulations. An investigation by the department’s Wage and Hour Division found Ontario Partners LLC had temporary H-2A agricultural workers processing onions from a farm not on their program application and did not pay the workers time-and-one-half rates for hours over 40 in a workweek. The Fair Labor Standards Act only allows employers to use its overtime exemption for employees who only process the employer’s own…
