Debate continues to rage in Australia over whether children should (or can) be banned from social media. While vapes or e-cigarettes first appeared around 20 years ago as an alternative to smoking, their prevalence and use have increasingly become problematic. Governments and regulators are now catching up to what is widely seen as an addictive and unsafe product. Australia has just passed a world-first bill that will ban all vapes from general retail later this year. Currently, the most predominant vapes on the market are single-use, disposable products designed to appeal to younger people. Despite their short lifespan, vapes are complex products that contain several valuable resources. However, there are no practical means to collect or recycle…

Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance like dust or pollen. Hay fever, hives and anaphylaxis are all types of allergic reactions. Many of those affected reach quickly for antihistamines to treat mild to moderate allergies (though adrenaline, not antihistamines, should always be used to treat anaphylaxis). By the end, Sunak had probably “won” the encounter, though a snap poll afterwards suggested viewers felt it was 50-50. Either way, the debate isn’t likely to change much when voters go to the polls. The truth is that this election is over, and the Conservatives have lost. There’s a wider point, though. It may have been strategically canny, but Starmer’s ploy to make himself as small a target as possible for hostile newspapers to attack made for thin gruel for those watching. And while failing to beat Sunak in a TV debate doesn’t matter, failing to win over the…

Despite an ongoing outbreak of bird flu in dairy cows, the popularity of raw milk has only risen. Advocates claim raw milk has superior health benefits over pasteurized milk. There is little evidence to support these claims, however, and the risk of serious illness is much greater. Mississippi State University food scientists Juan Silva and Joel Komakech and nutritionist Mandy Conrad explain the difference between pasteurized and raw milk, addressing common misconceptions about the health risks and purported benefits of consuming unpasteurized milk. These questions are more important than ever, since cattle can shed viral material into their milk. Not…
