The ancestors of Alaska Native people began using local copper sources to craft intricate tools roughly 1,000 years ago. Over one-third of all copper objects archaeologists have found in this region were excavated at a single spot, named the Gulkana Site. This is the site I’ve studied for the past four years as a Ph.D. student at Purdue University. In spite of its importance, the Gulkana Site is not well known. To my knowledge, it isn’t mentioned in any museums. Locals, including Alaska Native Ahtna people, who descend from the site’s original inhabitants, might recognize the name, but they don’t…

They went there as part of ‘Operation Overlord’ to secure safe passage for those who would follow on the next day. So many of these soldiers did not return from this operation and the D-Day landings that followed, but their role in securing victory is of immense importance to Harwell’s heritage. And whilst the runway is sadly no longer in use, there now stands a cenotaph, marking the point from which the operation lifted off. Eighty years later, it is impossible to imagine how those soldiers were feeling, as they prepared to meet hostilities on the Normandy shores. But we…

In late May 2024, I travelled to the United States-Mexico border to study the smart-wall addition to the border structure. I was accompanied by Arizona-based journalist and friend, Todd Miller, and we studied the wall as Customs and Border Protection trucks rumbled by and drones scanned the sky. Makeshift memorial for 16-year-old José Antonio Elena Rodriguez, who was shot by U.S. Border Patrol for allegedly throwing rocks at the wall. (P. Molnar), CC BY We also watched as a young man scaled the rusty border wall and jumped down, right underneath a surveillance tower. With a quick look over his…

When asked to describe an ideal organisational leader, many people might be inclined to use quite serious adjectives such as solemn, determined or results-oriented. Yet one trait is not only often overlooked, but also essential for managers. Humour – whether it manifests as a funny anecdote, joke, performance or witty remark – is a crucial tool for good leadership. When used well, humour can increase employees’ psychological empowerment, job performance and wellbeing, and also make people perceive their leaders as more effective. But many managers are not humour-savvy. As a result, humour is often used ad hoc rather than as…

Typically, East Asia is considered to encompass China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan. In geopolitical terms, Vietnam is often categorized as part of Southeast Asia. But we surveyed Vietnam along with East Asia for several reasons, including its historic ties to China and Confucian traditions. Moreover, Buddhists in Vietnam practice the same strain of Buddhism (Mahayana) found across East Asia. Throughout this report, the term “East Asia” refers to Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. When discussing trends throughout the broader “region,” we include Vietnam. For legal and logistical reasons, we did not…

ARLINGTON, TX – A federal workplace safety investigation of a global manufacturer and distributor of pet products in Arlington identified one willful violation and eight serious violations of required safety regulations during its investigation into how an employee suffered severe facial burns in December 2023.  Inspectors with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration learned that three workers at Doskocil Manufacturing Inc., operating as Petmate, were using a pry bar to break off excess plastic, called drool, as they cleaned a structural foam machine when an injection nozzle dislodged and sprayed molten plastic into face of one worker. Reform has been gaining in the polls since Farage spectacularly announced his intention to stand at the election, with some right-leaning Conservative figures, including Braverman, arguing there should now be a place for him inside the Tory tent.  Bale said that if Reform does well on July 4, there would be “a bunch of Braverman-style MPs who will be up for uniting the right by inviting Farage and his colleagues into the Tory fold.” He predicted that any fightback from the moderates would depend on their mettle. “Will they have the cojones to take on the right? Frankly, I’m not…

Three-quarters of all matter in the universe is made up of hydrogen. The young Earth was also rich in hydrogen, thanks to fierce geological and volcanic activity. Just as stars burn hydrogen to produce heat and light through nuclear reactions, life emerged by extracting energy from this simple molecule via chemical reactions. Some of these early life forms were archaea: an enigmatic third form of life only discovered in the 1970s. (The other two forms are bacteria and eukaryotes, the group that includes all animals, plants and fungi.) We have studied thousands of species of archaea to understand how they…
