LONDON — The U.K. has banned the export of every item the Russian military has been found using in Ukraine as a part of a fresh round of sanctions against Moscow, it announced Friday.
The Foreign Office said the export ban will apply to things like aircraft parts, radio equipment, and electronic components that have been used by the Russian military in drones and other weapons used to attack Ukraine.
The new package — timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — also includes financial sanctions against senior executives from Russian state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom and from Russia’s two largest defense companies.
Four more Russian banks, including MTS, have also been hit with curbs.
U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today will today urge G7 leaders to keep up their support for Ukraine. And his defense secretary on Friday morning suggested Britain could help “backfill” eastern European country’s own stocks if they send Soviet-era fighter planes to the war-torn country.
Announcing the latest sanctions round, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said “we must do more to help Ukraine win.”
“Today we are sanctioning the elites who run Putin’s key industries and committing to prohibit the export to Russia of every item Russia has been found using on the battlefield,” he said.
U.S. President Joe Biden is also announcing further sanctions on firms and entities that have helped the Russian war effort, alongside fresh military aid to Ukraine. The White House said the package would clamp down on more than 200 targets from Russia, as well as countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
