In Sweden, the left-wing bloc narrowly defeated the right-wing government bloc led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in the parliamentary elections. The Social Democrats, led by Magdalena Andersson, once again emerged as the strongest force—despite one of the worst election results in Swedish history. The nationalist Sweden Democrats were the big losers in the election. Coalition negotiations are now likely to be difficult, however.
It was a nail-biter in Sweden. The results weren’t finalized until four days after the September 13 election: The left-wing bloc, led by the Social Democratic Workers’ Party, narrowly defeated Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing government with 175 seats. The nationalist Sweden Democrats support the right-wing government. The right-wing bloc secured a total of 174 seats.
Crucial for Swedes: They don’t want further cuts to social services
One of the main reasons voters chose the Left Bloc was the right-wing government’s dismantling of the welfare state. For decades, Sweden was considered a prime example of a successful welfare state. The previous government carried out privatizations in an increasing number of sectors, such as health care and education. The right-wing government also imposed stricter conditions on unemployment benefits.
This marked a paradigm shift in the country. Many voters were dissatisfied with this and chose parties that aim to strengthen the welfare state once again.
Political Blocs in Sweden
The various parties in Sweden have formed two major blocs: the Left Bloc and the Right Bloc. Each bloc encompasses the parties represented in the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) from the center to the left and from the center to the right, respectively.
The Left Block consists of the Social Democratic Party, the socialist Left Party, the liberal Center Party, and the eco-socialist Greens. The Right Block consists of the conservative Moderates, the Christian Social Democrats, the Liberals, and the nationalist Sweden Democrats.
Corruption Scandals: Foundations, Parties, and Chicken Coops
Corruption scandals also weakened the right-wing bloc. Prime Minister Kristersson is accused of using his position of power to support his wife’s foundation as well as the one where his sister-in-law served on the board of directors. He is also alleged to have made government employees work at private parties and to have planned to use taxpayer money to build a chicken coop.
The Left Block vs. the Right Block in Sweden
Government formation negotiations are now likely to be difficult and protracted. There are major differences in policy between the two blocs. The Left Block consists of the Social Democrats, the Greens, the Left Party, and the Center Party. There are significant political differences and mutual distrust, particularly between the liberal Center Party and the socialist Left Party.
But the right-wing bloc is also anything but united. The nationalist Sweden Democrats have so far supported the right-wing government made up of the Moderates, Liberals, and Christian Democrats. However, the Sweden Democrats were promised ministerial posts in a new right-wing government. This has caused particular unease among the Liberals and Moderates, who have a difficult relationship with the Sweden Democrats and have been repeatedly attacked by them.
