Heavy rains hit the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil on December 20, 2022, causing severe floods and landslides in which at least 2 people lost their lives.

The worst affected is the municipality of Camboriú where 259.3 mm (10.2 inches) of rain fell in 24 hours, flooding about 60% of its territory.

Firefighters said they carried out more than 200 rescues.

Floods were also reported in the municipalities of Jaraguá do Sul, Ilhota, Itapema, Porto Belo and Penha.

Two sisters, aged 15 and 17, were killed and one injured after a landslide buried a house in the Jardim Aliança neighborhood, Camboriú.

Around 190 people have been displaced by flooding across Santa Catarina, of which 90 are being housed in emergency shelters.

Local states of emergency have been declared in Camboriú and Penha.

The National Institute of Meteorology has forecast further showers and isolated thunderstorms on December 21. Conditions are expected to improve from December 22.
