Hours after a court fined climate activist Greta Thunberg for disobeying police last month, she was forcefully removed from a protest in Malmö, Sweden.
Thunberg — accompanied by more than a dozen activists — blocked the road on Monday to an oil harbor, holding a sign that said “I block tanker trucks.” She was “forcibly removed” by police, according to Reuters.
Earlier in the day, a local court ordered Thunberg to pay a little more than €129 in fines and €86 to the Crime Victim Fund for refusing to stop blocking oil trucks in Malmö back in June. “We cannot save the world by playing by the rules,” she said about the verdict.
Thunberg, now 20, has been the face of the global youth climate movement since beginning a one-person protest in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018 while in high school. As other youth activists joined, the protest turned into the global Fridays for Future movement. She was named TIME’s person of the year in 2019 for drawing global attention to the climate activism movement.
“The climate crisis doesn’t care about such things. I’m not discouraged by it,” Thunberg said on Monday to reporters of her removals.
