PARIS — France’s Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné was on his way to Ukraine on Friday, the day after his appointment in a widely expected government reshuffle.
According to the French foreign ministry, the schedule of his visit was still in flux Friday, but it is expected Séjourné will meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday. According to several French media reports, he will stop off in Poland before taking the train to Kyiv.
On Friday morning, Séjourné said support for Ukraine was one of his priorities alongside working toward the reform of international institutions and promoting Europe as “a powerhouse.”
“Helping Ukraine guarantees the victory of democracy over totalitarianism,” he said as he took over responsibilities at the foreign ministry. Séjourné’s trip to Ukraine comes on the heels of a visit from U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who pledged to give Kyiv £2.5 billion in military aid in 2024/25.
The former Renew Europe Group president also said he would visit Warsaw and Berlin in a bid to “revive the Weimar triangle,” a reference to the regional alliance between France, Germany and Poland set up after the Cold War.
He is expected to meet the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Berlin on Monday.
