Secretary-General António Guterres declared that “from climate chaos and conflicts to COVID-19”, the most vulnerable were being hit the hardest. Amplifying this year’s theme, Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind, spotlighting widening inequalities in living conditions across the world, he said that rapid and unplanned development of towns and cities, was making conditions worse. “We need more urgent action and greater investment to provide affordable housing to all – alongside access to electricity, water, sanitation, transport, and other basic services. An order by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for thousands of truckers to end their strike last week drew comparisons to a “dictatorship,” but Yoon on Monday was preparing to expand the order to truck drivers in the petroleum and steel industries, ignoring their calls for fair pay. Truck drivers in South Korea have been on strike for nearly two weeks, demanding a permanent adoption of the country’s Safe Trucking Freight Rates System (STFRS)—a minimum rate introduced in 2020 that truckers say has allowed them to make a living without increasing their workloads and driving unsafely in order to make…

Burns now in charge of the CIA, the agency might be expected to be an influential player in the US response to a “new cold war”. Special Representative Volker Perthes commended military and civilian leaders, saying they have come a long way since then. “The framework agreement now offers a path to realize the aspirations of Sudan’s youth, women and men,” he said, speaking from the capital, Khartoum. Path to democracy The document is supposed to lay the groundwork towards a final accord and the formation of a new civilian government over a two-year period. “A final political agreement, once reached, will lead to a civilian government that should be in a better position to address the security, humanitarian and economic situation, should pave the way…
Throughout history, sports have been guilty of prioritising certain groups at the exclusion of others. There has been a pervasive idea that being an athlete requires the demonstration of traditionally masculine traits. Any individual not doing so was, and often still is, susceptible to being harassed, sidelined, or ostracised. Indeed, femininity has historically been considered nonathletic. Research finds some athletes describe a perception that being a “woman” and an “athlete” are almost opposing identities. For these reasons and more, women’s sport has been held back in ways that men’s sport has not. While progress is certainly now being made, our…
