The UK voted for this resolution as an important step in bringing about an end to the conflict that has raged since the horrific attacks on 7th October, and moving towards lasting peace. The situation in Gaza is catastrophic and the suffering has gone on for far too long. The deal on the table is something that the UK has long-called for. It is the best way to get the remaining hostages out, bring about an immediate ceasefire leading to a permanent end to hostilities and enable a significant scaling up of much-needed humanitarian aid. We call upon the parties to…

Curious Kids is a series for children of all ages. If you have a question you’d like an expert to answer, send it to curiouskidsus@theconversation.com. How do they build things like tunnels and bridges underwater? – Helen, age 10, Somerville, Massachusetts When I was a kid, I discovered a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip that posed one of my own burning questions: How do they know the load limit on bridges? Calvin’s dad (incorrectly) tells him, “They drive bigger and bigger trucks over it until it breaks. Then they weigh the last truck and rebuild the bridge.” Several decades later,…

Prior to the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan posited that the Middle East had been “quieter than it has been for decades”. This is obviously no longer the case. On the contrary, the heart-wrenching state of the region has inflamed tensions and inspired generation-defining protests across the world. This unrest has led many to wonder if the Biden administration’s Middle East policies will ultimately undermine the president’s re-election campaign against former president Donald Trump in November. It ultimately may. But even if the occupant of the White House changes, US policy toward the…

Although the Tuskegee Syphilis Study is one of the best-known examples of race-based medical malpractice, there are others. Throughout the 20th century, Black women were subject to eugenics laws that forcibly sterilized them. In 1951, Henrietta Lacks’ cervical cells were harvested and studied without her knowledge or consent – a legal case that was settled in 2023. Today, both Black men and Black women specifically seek out Black doctors to avoid racial discrimination in medical care and improve their health outcomes. This history of mistrust provides the context for Black Americans’ beliefs in racial conspiracy theories about the health care…

On Monday, Farage instead endorsed the incumbent Democratic Unionist MPs Ian Paisley (North Antrim) and Sammy Wilson (East Antrim), both of whom have been arch-Brexiteers and critical of the DUP-backed deal, too. “As far as the Northern Ireland thing is concerned, I want to make it clear that whilst there have been negotiations going on in previous times, I will personally be endorsing Ian Paisley and Sammy Wilson,” Farage told PA’s Claudia Savage, who reminded him of the Reform-TUV alliance. “Well, new leadership brings change. I wish the TUV well, but I’m gonna stand up to support Sammy Wilson and…

Some of the most enduring stereotypes about Black people have their roots in images created during and immediately after slavery. Black Americans have also said the news media specifically characterizes them as disproportionately poor, welfare-dependent and criminal. This history of stereotypical imagery provides some context for Black…
