NATO leaders have focused on “Trump-proofing” the alliance out of fear that former President Donald Trump could win office again and fracture the bloc, and it’s still unclear whether they could stop him. The final hurdle for Biden is Thursday night’s unscripted post-summit news conference, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. | Saul Loeb/Getty Images Some NATO leaders are open to bumping up the defense spending requirement to 3 percent of a country’s GDP, while other members aren’t close to the 2 percent target. In a world-first study, we have revealed and analysed remarkably preserved fragments of ancient DNA from the skin of a woolly mammoth. For the first time, we’ve been able to understand how the genetic instructions for this extinct species were organised inside its cells. This is known as genome architecture – the three-dimensional arrangement of DNA in the cell’s nucleus. The research, published today in Cell, was a mammoth international effort, including teams from the United States, Australia, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, Russia and Norway. The discovery greatly enhances our understanding of a lost species. By examining the genome architecture of…

Plankton — tiny organisms that are present in salt and freshwater — account for about half of the photosynthesis on the planet. But what scientists have assumed for many years to be plant plankton (phytoplankton) may actually be voracious predators. In lakes, plankton prey on single-celled bacteria that are in turn responsible for recycling nutrients that keep lake food webs functioning. I am a researcher studying phytoplankton and zooplankton (animal plankton). In my lab, we focus on factors influencing the biodiversity and functioning of plankton communities, including climate change and pollutants into lakes. We have recently been exploring bacterial feeding…
