The Swedish transport administration Trafikverket is working on a new project that is developing an electric road with the capability to charge vehicles as they drive over it. This way, it allows for a lesser time when waiting around dedicated charging stations.
There are currently a few options that Trafikverket is looking to create — the first is to string power lines along the overhead and have them transmit energy toward a conductive pickup. This will be under the vehicle and the other option is to implant electromagnetic coils directly into the asphalt in an inductive system. The new electric highway has plans to be ready as soon as 2025 and will be running through the European E20 stretch.
