A major police operation was underway Monday evening in the European Quarter of Brussels, with armed suspects reportedly holed up in a building close to the European Commission.
Willemien Baert, spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office, confirmed local media reports that police were called following an incident in the area.
The suspects are in a building in Rue Boduognat, located between Ambiorix Square and the Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters, according to media reports.
A police helicopter was seen circling over the area and about 30 officers and fire trucks were on the scene. The officers said they were not authorized to provide any further information.
