BRUSSELS — A European Parliament assistant working for an MEP in the European People’s Party was shot and injured in Brussels on Wednesday night.

An EPP spokesperson confirmed to POLITICO that a woman working for a Swedish member of the group was wounded and taken to hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. The spokesperson did not name the assistant or the MEP.

Belgian media reported that four people were injured in the shooting, which took place on Avenue de la Toison d’Or, a popular shopping street.

It is not being considered a terror attack, local media reported.

Swedish EPP lawmaker Tomas Tobé said on X: “One of our employees has been injured in a shooting in Brussels. Terrible. The person in question is receiving care at the moment, the situation is not considered to be critical.”

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola told POLITICO via her spokesperson: “My thoughts are with the EP staff member and the others injured in this evening’s shooting in Brussels. I wish them all a speedy recovery. And I am grateful to the emergency services. I have spoken to the Member who employs the assistant and will speak to her as soon as she has recovered.”
