Christine Quinn and Bishop Matthew Heyd explain how their new coalition, called NY Sane, aims to pressure the mayor and governor to treat migrants the same way they would any one else seeking shelter here:
“The steps that the mayor and now the governor are taking are not thoughtful, they’re not empathetic. They seem to think if you wave a wand and say ‘no more right to shelter,’ which has been the law of the land so to speak for 40-plus years, that all of a sudden the homeless people, new arrivals and others, will go away. You know what happens when you eliminate the right to shelter? Do you know what a city looks like? San Francisco, and San Francisco is criticized across the board as being a place where there are people right and left living on the street.”
