Milroy Irish 5, Hadley 2 (7 innings)

HADLEY — Tyler Patterson put together a well-rounded effort for the Milroy Irish on Sunday. The first baseman and pitcher reached base safely twice, drove in a run, and picked up the win on the mound to lead the Irish to a 5-2 win over the Hadley Buttermakers.

Patterson pitched 4 2/3 innings in his start for the Irish, holding Hadley to three hits on the day. He allowed a pair of unearned runs after walking seven batters but struck out another three.

The Irish struck first in the top of the first when Dominic Dolan hit a leadoff single, advanced to third on a Derek Smith single and scored on an Andrew Wallen ground out. One inning later, Patterson hit a leadoff triple and then scored on a Dominic Dolan sacrifice fly to double the Milroy lead.

In addition to recording a pair of hits on the day, Dolan also earned the save on the mound after pitching a shutout seventh inning. He recorded a walk and a strikeout.

Bryce Ahrendt pitched the first six innings for Hadley, allowing four earned runs and one unearned on six hits and four walks. He also struck out three batters.

In relief, Sam Brickson retired the side in order in the seventh to finish the game for Hadley.

The Irish increased their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning after a Moses Dolan walk and consecutive singles by Dominic Dolan and Levi Maeyaert loaded the bases. Derek Smith hit a sac fly to drive in one run and, after Anthony Dolan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Konnor Zick reached on a dropped third strike passed ball to score Dominic and Patterson walked to drive in Maeyaert.

Hadley got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Larson walked, Derek Kluis reached on an error and Brent Hokeness walked to load the bases with one out. Max Zwart then singled and an error allowed two runners to score on the play. Yet, Hadley was never able to cut the deficit any further.

Anthony Dolan relieved Patterson on the mound after the play and pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings, allowing one run and a pair of walks.

Milroy improves to 11-5 with the win while Hadley falls to 7-7. The Buttermakers will go on the road to face Raymond for their next game on Saturday while Milroy will next host Pipestone on July 10.

Willmar 7, Milroy Yankees 4

WILLMAR — The Milroy Yankees fell on the short end of a pair of seventh-inning rallies on Monday night, dropping 7-4 to the Willmar Rails.

The Yankees trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh when they surged ahead. Zach Leibfried and David Schmidt singled consecutively and an Alex Schuh sacrifice fly and a Jake Tauer single gave Milroy the lead.

The Rails, however, didn’t let Milroy remain on top for long. Willmar drew three walks and hit a double and two singles to score five runs in the bottom of the frame, pulling back ahead for a 7-6 lead.

Milroy loaded the bases with two outs in each of the last two innings. Yet, both times its rallies fell fruitless.

Parker Schmitt pitched the first six innings for Milroy, allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks. In relief, Aaron Mathiowetz allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks.

The Yankees scored the game’s first runs in the top of the fifth. Isaac Schmitt walked and Jackson Hughes singled to put runners on the corners. A passed ball scored Schmitt and Hughes scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Yet, the Rails came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a double, a walk and two hit batters, to claim the lead.

Milroy falls to 8-6 with the loss and will look to bounce back on Sunday when it goes on the road for a matchup against the Marshall A’s.

AMERICAN LEGION

Luverne JL 3,

Marshall 15U 1

LUVERNE — Quality pitching wasn’t enough to put Marshall 15U VFW Orange on top on Monday as a lack of run support left Marshall with a 3-1 loss to Luverne Junior Legion.

Ethan Weedman pitched all seven innings for Marshall, allowing one earned run on seven hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out four batters.

Luverne went ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the third. Marshall responded in the fourth when Nick Frazee doubled and then scored on a Luverne error, but Luverne came back with another run in the fifth and shut Marshall out for the rest of the game.

Marshall drops to 12-6 on the season and will return to action on Monday when it hosts Willmar for a doubleheader at 5 p.m.

Luverne 6, Marshall JL 3

LUVERNE — A second-inning rally was too much for Marshall to overcome on Monday as Junior Legion Black dropped a road matchup against Luverne, 6-3.

Marshall scored the game’s first runs in the top of the first. Leyton Wherry and Tyler Kraft walked and Shep Jensen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Carson Kopitski then each walked to force in a pair of runs.

Marshall’s lead was short-lived, however. Luverne scored five runs in the second inning and another in the third to pull away.

Luverne kept Marshall scoreless until the seventh, in which Logan Phillippe drew another bases-loaded walk to force in a run with no outs. Yet, two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice left Marshall shy of the comeback.

Phillippe pitched the first three innings, allowing two earned runs and four unearned on five hits and three walks. In relief, Eli Weedman threw three shutout innings while allowing three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Marshall falls to 8-4 with the loss and will go on the road to face Willmar for a doubleheader on Monday at 5 p.m.
