China officially responded Wednesday to the TikTok ban adopted by the major European Union institutions.

“The EU claims to be the world’s most open market, but has repeatedly adopted restrictive measures, in the name of national security, to unreasonably suppress companies from other countries,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference Wednesday. “Such a practice jeopardizes confidence of the international community in the EU’s business environment.”

The European Commission and the Council of the EU last week banned their staff from using the video-sharing app. The European Parliament followed suit on Tuesday.
