Flexiv, a California-based robotics company that specializes in creating smart and easily usable robots for a variety of settings and applications, has created a massage robot that is designed to make use of giving soothing back massages.

This particular massage robot makes use of the Rizon 4 robotic arm to carry out the job. The robot is equipped with AI-fueled software and computer vision, which work in conjunction with one another to first figure out the location of the spine and other muscles. The robotic arm then makes use of a heated silicone massage attachment to figure out exact locations of key areas. The massage that follows can be programmed to either focus on specific areas or comprise a generalized massage of the entire back area.

Flexiv’s marketing director Yunfan Gao said the company hopes that its massage robot will help evolve perceptions of what robotic devices are capable of and make machine-aided massage a regular feature. “People think nothing of buying food or drink from a vending machine, and we hope they will think the same way about purchasing a robotic massage,” Gao said.
