Architectural studio Rural Office has designed a quaint family home in Surrey. The style of the structure pays homage to late 19th-century architectural aesthetics while incorporating contemporary elements. Rural Office also drew inspiration from the arts and crafts movement when determining the look of the home.

Dubbed ‘Middle House Avenue,’ the structure places an emphasis on craftsmanship and the use of natural materials. The choice of brown brick, white-painted plaster, timber paneling, and bespoke wooden joinery creates a welcoming palette. The energy strategy of the house adheres to Passivhaus standards, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. Triple glazing, an airtight envelope, and mechanical heat recovery contribute to the house’s environmentally conscious design.

Middle Avenue House’s recognition as one of the winners of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ National Awards for 2023 and its nomination for RIBA House of the Year underscores its architectural merit and contribution to contemporary design.
