Rotten Tomatoes and GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics are now accepting applications to their joint Crimson Honors scholarship for underrepresented 2SLGBTQIA+ women and non-binary students of colour in film and TV journalism. A press release announced that over $6000 of financial assistance will be awarded to Southern California-based community and state students pursuing a career in journalism or entertainment criticism.

A select panel will evaluate all student submissions of film or TV criticism and/or commentary featured in a campus outlet in 2022. The Crimson Honors will be awarded to three students who “demonstrate excellence in their craft,” per the release. The grand prize winner will collect $3,000 and the two finalists will receive $1,500 each. All winners will also be entitled to additional prizes, including $100 Fandango and VUDU gift cards and a year-long GALECA membership.

Eligible candidates must be BIPOC non-binary or women students identifying as gay, bisexual, transgender or queer pursuing an education in journalism, cinema/TV studies, or communications. The program must be held at a public two-year community or four-year stage college in the Southern California area.

According to the scholarship criteria, applicants may submit up to three critiques or essays relating to film and/or TV published by an official campus media outlet, including magazines, websites, and podcasts. In addition to selected publications, applications must also include a 300-word statement on why a career as a critic and entertainment journalist is appealing. Candidates must also include a résumé and cover letter in their application.

Crimson Honor winners will be announced February 27.

The deadline to submit is December 31, 2022 at 11:59 PT. There are no entry fees. Submit an entry for the journalism scholarship here.
