If you’re looking for the best travel accessories for photographers, better ask a travel photographer right? Well, I’ve been seeing the world from behind a camera for as long as I can remember. I got my first camera, along with a basic photography book, when I was 8 years old. A few years later, I got my first digital camera – it was an Olympus C-1 – and from that point on, you’d never catch me without a camera.
After about a dozen different digital cameras and DSLRs from Canon and Pentax, plus some film cameras, photography courses, and a shrine dedicated to Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, I’m back to shooting Olympus, and I couldn’t be happier
Along with my beloved Olympus OM-1 EM-2 Mk 2, my camera bag is filled with all sorts of accessories that make it easy to capture beautiful photos of the landscapes and scenes around me whenever I travel. Check out these game-changing photography accessories that will help make every adventure a snap.

Best Travel Accessories For Photographers
1. Peak Design Travel Tripod
Searching for the perfect blend of portability, stability, and functionality in your camera gear? Let me introduce the Peak Design Travel Tripod — truly worthy of the praise it has gotten!
This tripod was tested out by our Editor-in-Chief, Kyle Kroeger, on a recent trip to Costa Rica. It is unbelievably compact yet super stable and sets up in record time. It also has an integrated ergonomic ball head that will make capturing every moment more effortless than ever.
The Peak Design Travel Tripod has been designed to break the mold in terms of size – it takes up half the space as regular tripods, so packing and transportation are a breeze.
You’ll barely notice this essential camera accessory tucked away in your camera bag, and it deploys to full height at a moment’s notice.
Despite its small size, the Peak Design Travel Tripod has all the stability and support you expect from a pro-level tripod. Testing with a full-frame digital camera and telephoto lens? Check. Say goodbye to shaky shots and hello to gorgeous images – this tiny tripod will ensure that your photos are always picture-perfect.
With its integrated ergonomic ball head, tuning in those perfect angle shots has never been easier. Forget a messy and complex pan and tilt head – all that’s needed now is a simple adjustment ring to help you get the most out of your photography session.
Now who said taking great photos had to be hard? Check out our detailed Peak Design Travel Tripod Review if you’re not yet convinced.
Pros
- Lightweight and compact for easy portability
- Innovative design with quick deployment and intuitive locking mechanisms
- Offers stability and high load capacity for steady shots

2. Mefoto Backpacker Tripod
Personally, I haven’t picked up the Peak Design Tripod yet because this budget-friendly Mefoto has been sitting in my camera closet for at least five years. The MeFOTO BackPacker Classic Aluminum Travel Tripod Kit is my ultimate travel buddy.
This ultra-lightweight aluminum alloy tripod comfortably carries up to 8.8 pounds of my gear and extends to a full 52 inches tall—but here’s the real kicker: it quickly folds into an incredibly tiny 12.6-inch package. It fits in my camera bags, so I never have to compromise on capturing those perfect moments when exploring.
The legs and center post are easily and quickly adjustable, so the MeFOTO BackPacker Tripod gives me absolute flexibility and stability. Its multiple locking leg angles make sure my tripod remains steady, no matter what kind of terrain or shooting angle. If things are still shaky, I hang something heavy from the recessed ballast hook at the base – easy peasy.
Do you want to keep your tripod safe and secure? Good thing the MeFOTO BackPacker Tripod Kit also includes a rugged carrying case with a shoulder strap. Now you can easily take that camera along for your adventures without worrying about where to store it.
My personal experience with this tripod came after I fell in love with the larger MeFOTO Road Trip Tripod. The Road Trip is also super compact, and a bit steadier for very windy conditions, but it’s a little too bulky to fit in my over-stuffed carry-on luggage for most trips. The Backpacker is one that I barely notice in my bag – it’s also my choice for bringing on hikes and stuffing, literally, into a backpack.
The Backpacker Tripod has stood up to wind on the Jersey Shore just fine, but I’d consider the Road Trip if you have heavy full-frame gear and if you don’t often take a tripod along with you on hikes.
Pros
- Sturdy build with durable aluminum construction
- Comes with a carrying case and an assortment of color options
- Offers good stability and decent load capacity for its size
Cons
- Limited maximum height compared to larger tripods
- Not as stable in windy conditions as heavier tripods

7. Lensball
As a creative photog always searching for something new to make my pictures stand out, I found the answer. The Lensball – an amazingly awesome crystal sphere – has become the highlight of my camera bag.
Its light-bending properties add some serious sparkle and appeal to my pics. It’s so cool that I can’t believe I ever shot without it.
After being fascinated by what the cool Lensball could do, I learned that it was made with the best K9 crystal-the same stuff used for top-shelf camera lenses and optics. This excellent crystal lets so much of the light shine through and creates pretty refractions bringing out my snaps in a lovely way. Plus, all those crazy light-bending tricks turn my pics into mini works of art.

I’m the first to admit it – I don’t understand off camera flash, and I barely understand on-camera flash. As a landscape photographer, I just rarely need it. I am really forgetful. In 2019, I flew to Chicago and forgot all of my camera batteries and had to expedite some to my hotel. In 2023, I did it again, this time in Newport Beach. When I got home from California, I dug out the Think Tank Photo DSLR Battery Case that has been sitting in my drawer for camera accessories for years, and decided to put it to work.
It has become an absolute must-have in my travel kit now, because it serves as a reminder to pack batteries! For most people, it will serve the purpose of keeping your bag organized, but I think of it as a multifaceted tool.
This sleek and streamlined design tucks conveniently into your bag without taking up too much space. Its custom-fit is made just for popular cameras like Nikon D810, Canon 5DMKIII, Sony A77, and Fuji X-T1, meaning all your DSLR battery worries disappear with this handy little case.

One of the benefits of shooting with Olympus gear is that it’s weatherproof, but I’m still not excited to have it out in the pouring rain. 20. Lensrentals HD
Lensrentals is the reason I have some of my favorite shots. I’ve mentioned a few times that I shoot with an Olympus EM-1 Mk2 – and if you’re up on your stuff, you’ll note that it’s a bit of an outdated camera body. I’ve been waiting to upgrade to the OM-1 (the new flagship camera from OM System, the successor to the Olympus name), but in the meantime, I’ve rented gear for my most important trips.
It’s always nerve-wracking dealing with expensive equipment, but Lensrentals is a trusted name in the equipment rental industry. They have an extensive collection of cameras, lenses, and accessories, so you can expect to find what you need. Their commitment to customer satisfaction is unmatched – perfect if you need a rig quickly.
The customer service really makes Lensrentals stand out, and Lensrentals HD is their premium discount program. It pays for itself in just a few rentals, depending on how much gear you get.
Their Lensrentals HD program is one of the most cost-effective shipping discounts around. With access to a year of free Standard Shipping on all your orders, you can save big on anything you need for a quick weekend getaway or an extended photography expedition.
One of the best things about Lensrentals HD is that they don’t have any items excluded from the program. Lensrentals HD is a versatile program that any travel photographer will get use out of. If you’re looking for a unique gift for the photographer in your life, a Lensrentals HD subscription is a safe bet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I choose the right camera bag for my gear?
There are plenty of different options when it comes to camera bags. Whether you decide to go with a messenger bag, a crossbody sling bag, or a backpack really depends on your photography style.
If you’re constantly on the go, a good photography backpack is invaluable. If you carry a lot of gear, a messenger-style bag would be the top choice. If you carry small mirrorless cameras, you might prefer a sling bag.
What are the best tripod options for different types of photography?
Choosing a tripod is one of the most important things for a photographer. After all, tripods are pretty big investments and truly affect the outcome of low light or long exposure photography.
Our top overall pick for travel tripod is the Peak Design Travel Tripod. For photographers who need a compact tripod, the MeFOTO Backpacker is a top pick. For serious photographers needing stability for very heavy gear, FotoPro tripods are industry standard.
