Major infrastructure upgrade starts at Wellington Barracks

The demolition works mark the start of an infrastructure upgrade that will improve facilities for service personnel based at one of the Army’s most historic sites.

Delivered through the Army Estate Modernisation Programme, the project is being managed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and delivered by Galliford Try, with Arcadis providing technical support. The investment will benefit the Army musicians of the Foot Guards Bands, supporting the Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Welsh Guards.

The first phase of the project involves the demolition of three outdated band facilities, clearing the way for new, purpose-built band accommodation better suited to the needs of the musicians. Further works will deliver refurbished Single Living Accommodation, upgraded support infrastructure and improved ventilation to the temporary stabling area.

Major General AJ Smith CBE, Director of Army Basing & Infrastructure said:

The start of demolition works at Wellington Barracks is a significant milestone in creating a better environment for our people. By investing in modern facilities, we are improving the lived experience of soldiers, supporting their wellbeing, and strengthening the operational capability that underpins Army success.

Warren Webster, DIO Major Programmes and Projects Programme Director – Army, said:

This milestone reflects the strong collaboration between the Army, DIO, Galliford Try and Arcadis. Together, we are investing in Wellington Barracks to provide modern facilities, while respecting the heritage of this iconic site and supporting its future role.

Scheduled for completion in 2028, the project will support and enable personnel at Wellington Barracks to continue fulfilling their ceremonial and operational roles in the heart of London.
