President Ursula von der Leyen met with President João Lourenço of Angola during the 2025 Global Gateway Forum. The meeting highlighted the EU’s support to Angola, through the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, to advance economic diversification and job creation, sustainable growth, and regional integration. The partnership is further strengthened by Angola’s chairmanship of the African Union and its upcoming hosting of the EU–AU Summit in Luanda.
The European Union is stepping up its investments in Angola’s economic diversification, with a particular focus on the sustainable development of the Lobito Corridor under the Global Gateway strategy. This year alone, nearly €57 million in grants are being committed to support key agricultural value chains and associated logistics platforms along the Corridor.
The European Commission is committing €50 million to strengthen key agriculture value chains along the Lobito Corridor. This grant will support sustainable production, distribution and investments in the sector, benefitting among others small-holder farmers.
In addition, the project “From Transport to Trade: Lobito Corridor Catalyst”, supported by a €8 million grant (European Commission: €7 million; Netherlands: €1 million) is being announced. This project will contribute to develop the Caala Logistics Platform next to the Lobito Corridor railway, a modern hub designed to streamline the storage, handling, and transportation of goods, improving efficiency for local producers and regional trade.
European engagement has resulted in Team Europe members together investing over €2 billion in the Lobito Corridor across Angola, the DRC, and Zambia. Through these investments, Global Gateway is driving inclusive and sustainable growth in the region to unlock the Lobito Corridor’s potential as a hub for trade, employment, and development.

The development of the Lobito Corridor is a key Global Gateway flagship.
Global Gateway Forum
The Global Gateway Forum brings together leaders from the European Union and across the globe, alongside the private sector, civil society, financial institutions and international organisations, to promote sustainable investment worldwide.
Global Gateway
Global Gateway is the EU’s offer to boost smart, clean and secure connections in the digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems. Through a Team Europe approach, it aims to mobilise up to €300 billion in investments by 2027, closing the global investment gap and creating lasting links rather than dependencies.
