European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, participated today in the G7 Development Ministers’ Meeting, which took place on the theme “Fostering Partnerships for Economic Prosperity.”
This year’s meeting was hosted by Canada, which held the G7 Presidency at its 50th anniversary. Discussions focused on strengthening development cooperation and advancing mutual economic growth.
Supporting G7 unity and advancing global partnerships
Commissioner Síkela emphasized the European Union’s strong commitment to sustainable development, and shared prosperity.
Speaking during a first session on G7 Priorities for Development Cooperation, he highlighted the importance of continued coordination among G7 members. He also took the opportunity to reaffirm the EU’s support for the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), the G7’s collective initiative to promote quality infrastructure and mobilise sustainable investments worldwide.
“This meeting confirmed that international development cooperation remains at the core of the G7’s global agenda. At a time when coordinated, strategic investments in sustainable development are more important than ever, the European Union continues to lead this effort. Through the PGII and our Global Gateway, we are advancing transparent, fair, and sustainable connectivity that strengthens resilience and delivers tangible results.” Commissioner Síkela said.
Global Gateway: Europe’s vision for sustainable investment and shared prosperity
Commissioner Síkela reminded of the importance of the Global Gateway, the EU’s investment strategy for sustainable and trusted partnerships. As announced by the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen during last week’s Global Gateway Forum, Team Europe has mobilised €306 billion over the last four years to support transformative investments in clean energy, transport, digitalisation, health, education, and research.
Additionally, the Commissioner took the opportunity to highlight recent progress made under the Global Gateway strategy, including the launch of the Global Gateway Investment Hub, which will accelerate the assessment and delivery of strategic projects.
Strengthening economic transformation and mutual growth
During the second session on Opportunities for Economic Transformation and Mutual Growth, which included participation from other partner countries, Commissioner Síkela highlighted the EU’s continuous ambition to build mutually beneficial partnerships through Global Gateway, linking economic growth with global priorities such as climate action, food security, and migration resilience.

Global Gateway is the EU’s positive offer to reduce the worldwide investment disparity and boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems.
The Global Gateway strategy embodies a Team Europe approach that brings together the European Union, EU Member States, and European development finance institutions. Together, we aim to mobilise up to €300 billion in public and private investments from 2021 to 2027, creating essential links rather than dependencies, and closing the global investment gap.
