Most Romantic Destinations in Europe

1. Keukenhof Gardens, Netherlands

Keukenhof is, without a doubt, one of the most romantic destinations in Europe. This beautiful tulip garden is famous worldwide because it sows millions of tulip buds yearly. During the tulip season, the colorful flowers form intricate patterns and symbolize Dutch life in the Netherlands.

The gardens are open for tourists in spring for about six weeks, from March to May. During this time, you will find that loads of tulip tours from Amsterdam head out every day. Since this is a highly sought-after activity, I recommend booking your tour/ticket in advance.

Now, while the gardens are attractive, I highly recommend exploring the area around the gardens too. These are equally scenic, with rows and rows of colorful tulip fields and rather peaceful country roads.

One of the most romantic things here is to cycle with the fields flanking you on either side. It is definitely an experience to remember.

2. Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre, located in Italy, stands out as one of the most romantic destinations in Europe with its charming and colorful seaside villages.  Walk through the five small towns with your loved one and explore narrow alleys, admiring the pastel-colored houses.

Each village, including popular ones like Vernazza and Manarola, offers unique and gorgeous views. Couples can walk along the Path of Love, also known in Italian as Via dell’Amore.

This path stretches between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola. It is famous for being a unique, romantic trail with beautiful views.

Take a boat tour to see the beauty of all the villages from the water for a different perspective. And don’t forget about the food! Try the local dishes, sip on the local wine or limoncello, and enjoy a scoop (or two!) of Italian gelato.

If you want to truly explore all Cinque Terre offers, spend about five days there. However, a shorter visit of two or three days will still allow you to experience the charm of this Italian gem.

For those keen on spending time in the great outdoors, one of the most romantic places to visit in Europe is Grindelwald. This picturesque town is filled with stunning views of the Swiss Alps that will leave you in awe. Plus, all kinds of activities around Grindelwald are perfect for couples.

With its Romanesque chapels, cellars, Gothic cathedrals, palaces, lush gardens, and colorful alleyways, Prague oozes Romance. Couples can share a deliciously sweet and spicy Chimney Cake and get lost in the endless, fairy-tale cobblestone streets.

Are you feeling cheeky? Maybe steal a quick kiss under a pastel-colored building in the historic Jewish Quarter! In the evening, nothing is more romantic than strolling across the world-famous Charles Bridge together as the sun sets and the sound of local musicians floats through the air.

Finish the evening by holing up in a small cellar and sipping the light and crisp local beer. For the couple who loves diving into history and art, Prague offers lots of museums to get lost in and discuss the meaning of each painting together.

If you’re looking for a romantic escape in Europe, two days in Venice is the place to go. Italy’s lovely UNESCO city has the perfect ambiance for honeymooners and couples in love looking for a special getaway.

For centuries, lovers have been charmed by the beauty of Venezia. Imagine a medieval setting with extravagant palazzi overlooking the Canale Grande, gondolas gliding down ancient waterways, and a wealth of Gothic churches embellished by the great Renaissance masters.

Stay in the heart of the old town for three nights in a luxurious palace hotel or a budget-friendly townhouse with a canal view. If you wake early, wander along to Piazza San Marco waterfront and watch the sunrise over Venice Lagoon. Have breakfast in Caffè Florian, an elegant 18th-century coffeehouse. Then, visit the Cathedral before day-trippers arrive.

It’s easy to spend a whole day discovering the wonders of Venice, the historic sites, and art museums. A labyrinth of waterside footpaths hides lesser-known treasures and a glimpse into the Venetian way of life.

Evening calls for more romance… a private serenading gondolier tour, followed by a seafood dinner and Italian wine on a terrace beside the canals. Ride a vaporetto over to the lagoon islands tomorrow. Explore the picturesque city of Murano and purchase mementos of hand-blown glass.

Have lunch by the main canal, then catch the water bus to Burano. Venice’s cutest isle is filled with multicolored fishermen’s homes and craft shops displaying handmade lace. Take a few selfies to immortalize the moment before getting the boat back.

Sail into St Mark’s Bay as the setting sun backlights the spires of Venice skyline with a magical glow. It’s an awe-inspiring way to end your trip to the most romantic place in the world.

Seville, Spain, is one of Europe’s most hopelessly romantic cities and is perfect for a couple’s getaway. Seville is filled with colorful streets, cobblestoned lanes, cozy tapas bars, and gorgeous squares and historical sites throughout the city.

You must wander through the Plaza de Espana, filled with blue, white, and yellow tiles and mosaics, lovely columns, and bridges over a canal where you can rent rowboats or book a romantic cruise!

Be sure to explore the Santa Cruz neighborhood – the most historic area in Seville with narrow, winding lanes. Visit the Seville Cathedral, climb the charming La Giralda bell tower, and the incredible Real Alcazar Palace. All of these spots are UNESCO sites!

Horsedrawn carriage rides are a popular and romantic way to get an overview of the city. You also must see a flamenco show – southern Spain’s traditional tantric and mesmerizing dance.

With one day in Seville, you can see some of the top highlights, and with two days, you can see almost all the attractions. Three days gives you plenty of time to see everything at a slower pace. Of course, you can also plan a few extra days to take day trips from Seville into the adorable towns in southern Spain’s countryside.

If you’re looking for romantic cities in Europe, one of the top destinations is the beautiful Copenhagen in Denmark. Why is it romantic?

Because there are so many options for activities that couples can do together. You only need two days in Copenhagen to enjoy these highlights and the romantic atmosphere.

Start with a morning stroll through the Nyhavn harbor. The colorful houses and premium cafes start to set the mood. Take a picnic basket filled with traditional smorrebrod to Rosenborg Castle for lunch with the immaculate gardens and quiet scenery.

If you want to be more active, bike around the city to explore all the local gems. Going to the Tivoli Gardens is also a fun day option. The amusement park has rides, games, flower gardens, and food for an excellent day with your significant other.

Finish your night by taking a horse-drawn carriage around part of the city and grab dinner at one of the many upscale restaurants. Spending time in this city is always a positive experience.

Being here with someone you care about makes it all the more better. So make sure to put this city on your travel itinerary.

8. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the epitome of a romantic getaway. This Greek island belongs to the Cycladic island group, and you can get to it on a short flight from Athens or on a ferry.  Here, you can meander through the white-washed alley surrounded by picture-perfect Cycladic houses and blue-dome churches.

Things to do for couples range from fine dining at one of the cliffside restaurants, sunset cruises around the island, and romantic photoshoots, like the iconic flying dress photo op, that can be enjoyed as a couple.

For a unique date idea, also consider a wine-tasting tour to explore Santorini’s unique vineyards, known for their basket-shaped vines and Assyrtiko wine.  Stay in one of the luxury suites with a caldera view in Oia for even more opportunities for romance. Most of the suites also come with a hot tub.

We stayed at Virginia’s Caves and loved it. Three days should be enough to experience the island, take a couple of tours, and spend some quality time together.

One of the most romantic places in Ireland is the Ashford Castle Hotel. This five-star luxury hotel in County Mayo epitomizes elegance and luxury! The Ashford Castle estate spans over 350 acres of land on the shore of Lough Corrib and includes various things to do.

Some of the most popular activities on the estate for couples include horseback riding, archery lessons, lake excursions, falconry, and enjoying a private picnic. You’ll find more things to enjoy inside the castle, like the luxurious Ashford Castle spa, elegant dining rooms, and private hotel tours.

The rooms inside Ashford Castle are breathtaking. The cozy oversized beds will make you want to spend all your spare time in the room!

While you could spend just one night at Ashford Castle, we highly recommend staying at least two nights to enjoy the experience more fully. Or check out one of these other Irish Castle Hotels!

10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

When I think of the most romantic city in Europe, my mind immediately thinks of Amsterdam. I might be biased because this is the city where my fiancé proposed to me, but he couldn’t have chosen a more perfect place.

Picture the iconic bridge-crossed canals lined with colorful and slightly crooked houses, trees filled with sparkling fairy lights, and the distant sound of music from a nearby bar. He chose to ask me while we sat on the edge of a canal people-watching, but there are so many romantic ways to share a special moment in Amsterdam.

You could hire a small boat for an evening on the canals or join a canal tour, including dinner and wine. Get cozy in one of the many small cafes or restaurants in the Negen Straatjes area, hire a couple of bicycles, and explore Vondelpark with a picnic, or even spend an afternoon in the beautiful Rijksmuseum, hand in hand, admiring all the artwork.

We lived local to Amsterdam for a couple of years, but I recommend spending no less than three days to make the most out of your time in this charming city. If you visit in springtime, head just outside the city center to admire the fields and fields of colorful tulips. If flowers don’t equal romance, then I don’t know what does!

Paris, France, is indisputably one of the most romantic places in Europe. It is the romantic backdrop to countless movies, and its most popular nickname is even “the City of Love.”

You’ll want to stay in Paris for at least three days.  Give yourself time for top attractions in Paris, such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre. Visit Montmartre to see “Le mur des je t’aime,” where the phrase “I Love You” is written in hundreds of languages.

But don’t pack your days full of rushing around sightseeing! Paris is a city that needs to be savored, so slow down and enjoy some of the simple joys with your special someone.

Stoll hand in hand along the banks of the Seine. Visit small shops to pick up cheeses and a baguette and have a romantic picnic in one of the beautiful parks of Paris.

Seeing Paris at night is dreamy, with all its monuments lit up and the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.  A night tour in Paris is a truly special experience, whether you choose a dinner cruise or a private sightseeing tour with a bottle of Champagne.

12. Dubrovnik, Croatia

One of my absolute favorite cities in Europe is Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is also an underrated destination for a romantic weekend getaway for Europeans or a full romantic holiday for those not part of the Schengen Zone.

Dubrovnik is a charming coastal city that is surrounded by a historic city wall. The city was made famous by the popular series, Game of Thrones. The beauty and charm of this city are perfect for a romantic stroll through the marble streets, dinner overlooking the water, or a boat tour of the Adriatic.

I recommend spending 4-6 nights in Dubrovnik. Take half those days to explore the city and surrounding area. For the rest of your vacation, take a couple of day trips from Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is perfect for day trips to Split, Mostar, and Kotor. Overall, Dubrovnik is a beautiful and romantic destination that belongs on any European travel bucket list.

Nestled prettily in the heart of the Austrian Alps and rising from the banks of the Salzach River, Salzburg is a picturesque and beguiling city filled with stately squares, overflowing with classical music, and graced with beautiful views—which makes it an excellent and very romantic destination for couples.

About a two to 2.5-hour train ride from Munich or Vienna, spend two to three days exploring this pretty city with its winding streets and stunning architecture. Wander the impressive main squares that make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ascend the Mönchsberg, topped with Fortress Hohensalzburg.

From the fortress, stroll the mountain-top path for amazing views at Richterhöhe, then head to Stadtalm, a nearby restaurant, for a romantic alfresco lunch with a view. After exploring the city, refresh at Augustiner, a 17th-century brewery with sprawling outdoor gardens.

Or if your tastes run sweeter, head to a riverside cafe like Café Bazar for a rich coffee and to share a multi-layered torte. To take in music during your visit, reserve a romantic evening candlelit Mozart Dinner Concert performed in one of the world’s oldest restaurants, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium.

Or catch a daily concert in the marble baroque halls of Mirabell Palace. You can even join a Sound of Music tour!

What’s more romantic than a getaway to Provence? From vibrant sunflower and lavender fields to charming hilltop towns and sprawling markets, no wonder it’s one of the most visited regions in France.

Also known as the “city of a thousand fountains,” spend the afternoon wandering around the charming squares, grab a drink under the plane trees, and soak in the slow Provencal lifestyle.

If you’re into art and museums, plenty will keep you busy in Aix-en-Provence. Visit the Atelier Cézanne to glimpse Paul Cézanne’s studio and life as an artist, or check out the annual exhibition at the Hotel de Caumont.

Rome is considered one of the most romantic cities in Europe. Famous for its impressive architecture, diverse culture, history, and vibrant atmosphere, it is a popular destination for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

There are romantic things you can do in Rome as a couple. Visit Trevi Fountain, the city’s largest fountain; this stunning baroque masterpiece is considered a symbol of love; they say that if you flip or throw three coins over your shoulder in the fountain, your dream of marriage will come true.

You can also spend your day exploring and wandering around Trastevere. This charming and cobblestoned neighborhood is famous for its narrow streets and vibrant and lively atmosphere; there are plenty of boutiques where you can shop for unique souvenirs and excellent restaurants and cafes.

You can spend two to three days in Rome if you would like to visit the major attractions of the city,  and you can extend a day or more if you’d like to explore other nearby destinations as well.

Affectionately known as the “Paris of the North,” Tromso is the perfect place to share for a romantic getaway. Tromso is precisely that, a dreamscape destination that is one of the most romantic places in Europe, especially in winter.

From stunning whiteout landscapes to candyfloss-sky sunsets and the northern lights dancing overhead, this is one of the most idyllic places for couples. A long weekend in Tromso is perfect to make the most of the region.

Wrap up and head out for a day of husky or reindeer sledding before warming up around a toasty fire. At night, the northern lights provide one of the best shows on Earth as the skies light up under dancing ribbons of green and blue. This is also an incredible opportunity for an ultra-special proposal.

And don’t miss the incredible views over the mountains and surrounding fjord. Head up the cable car while the houses below resemble a Christmas village, lights twinkling into the polar night. What could be more romantic than cozying up in a winter wonderland?

18. Colmar, France

Colmar is an extremely romantic town in the Alsace region of France. The city is simply beautiful, and walking around feels like you are in a fairytale. The colorful, timbered houses and cobbled streets with flowers certainly add to the romantic setting!

Activities for couples include a boat ride through the picturesque Petite Venise or some wine tasting. There are many regional museums and marvelous churches to visit, too. The best time to explore them is early in the morning, as the sun is coming up, right after enjoying a coffee with pastry!

Colmar has many delicious restaurants with excellent views and an intimate vibe. These serve regional Alsatian food, which is a delicious blend of French and German cuisine. A must-try dish is choucroute, a yummy French take on sausage and sauerkraut.

The prettiest spots are on the canal or in the colorful town squares. Visiting Colmar requires a few days, longer than visiting vineyards in the other local towns. Overall, Colmar is a top destination for couples to spend quality time in peace and quiet, with some serious BDE (that’s Big Disney Energy).
