The Rivers State Police Command on Friday morning arrested a member of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, Hon. Chinyere Igwe, in possession of an estimated $500,000 suspected to be funds to be deployed for vote buying in the presidential and national assembly elections slated for Saturday, February 25, 2023.
A list containing sharing formula and amounts to be given to various electoral units in Rivers State, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also recovered from Igwe, who reportedly claimed that the money was given to him by Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to ensure his victory in Rivers state.
Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the arrest to The Punch reportedly said, “A statement on it will be released soon.
According to Leadership newspaper, Igwe, who is a supporter of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was arrested along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the State capital.
Apart from the foreign currency allegedly in his possession, the Police also allegedly found a list of how the money was to be distributed to beneficiaries in the 23 local government areas of the state as well as security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
