A German court on Thursday ordered Meta to do more to combat defamatory posts, rejecting an appeal by the Facebook parent company after a lower court had ruled in favor of the plaintiff.
Renate Künast, a Green Party member of parliament, brought the case to court because a meme of her had been circulating on Facebook since 2015, attributing a quote to her that turned out to be false.
On Thursday, the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court ruled that “the misquotation constituted an unlawful infringement of the plaintiff’s general right of personality.” Meta must now also “delete other similar statements,” if notified about a post that violates Künast’s rights.
