EU and Ethiopia advance partnership for more trade and investments at the Global Gateway Forum

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with the President of Ethiopia Taye Atske Selassie during the Global Gateway Forum. On the 50th anniversary of the EU-Ethiopia bilateral relation, during the Forum the EU and Ethiopia will advance the partnership by working on shared interests like developing a strong trade and investment agenda. The EU will support investments, a conducive environment and macro-economic reforms. It will continue to accompany Ethiopia in its efforts for peace and stability, as well as migration management and forced displacement, which are key to ensure a prosperous future for all Ethiopians.

At the Forum, discussions focus on boosting economic investments under Global Gateway, notably in digital, energy, agrifood value chains and health areas. They also address sustained economic reforms and progress towards reconciliation, peace and national dialogue to maximise impact. A €105 million package shows the EU commitment.

The above-mentioned package will focus on:

  • €90 million to support actions on land governance, nature preservation, migration and gender economic empowerment.  More precisely, the EU will fund four actions:  Strengthening land governance for sustainable development in Ethiopia, nature conservation and sustainable landscape governance, strengthening national response and reintegration mechanisms for migrant returnees in Ethiopia and strengthening women-owned business ecosystem and women economic empowerment in key value chains.
  • €15 million to enhance the capacities of Ethiopia to support resilience and integration of refugees, and the sustainable reintegration of Ethiopian returning migrants. This is in line with the EU’s will to tackle cooperation on migration in a comprehensive way with a permanent dialogue and an extensive portfolio of support of migration management and forced displacement initiatives in Ethiopia.

Under the Global Gateway umbrella, the EU-Ethiopia partnership offers opportunities for investments in four areas:  Clean energy transition, digital transformation, sustainable agri-food value chains including logistics/corridors, and health systems strengthening.
