Today, the European Commission has appointed a new member of the governing body of the European Research Council (ERC), the Scientific Council. Mathematician András Stipsicz will assume his duties on 1 April 2025. Professor Stipsicz is Director of HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics in Budapest, Hungary, and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, said:
‘The European Research Council embodies Europe’s pursuit of scientific excellence. Professor András Stipsicz’s expertise and leadership will strengthen the ERC mission to advance frontier research across our continent. I welcome his appointment and wish him all the success in his new role.’
Prof. András Stipsicz graduated from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and received his PhD from Rutgers University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Irvine. He spent several semesters at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Berkeley, Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton University, Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, and the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Stockholm. He was awarded ERC Advanced Grants in 2012 and 2024.
Prof. Stipsicz is an expert in low-dimensional topology, a particular branch of topology focusing on dimensions four or lower. Topology as a discipline is concerned with the properties of a geometric object that are preserved under continuous deformations, such as stretching or bending.
Background
The European Research Council (ERC), set up by the European Union in 2007, awards grants through open competitions to projects headed by starting and established researchers, irrespective of their origins, who are working or moving to work in Europe. The sole criterion for selection is scientific excellence. The Scientific Council, the independent governing body of the ERC, defines the ERC’s scientific funding strategy and methodologies. It is composed of 22 members, all eminent scientists and scholars, who represent the scientific community in Europe and are appointed by the European Commission following recommendations by an independent Identification Committee. The ERC President, since 2021 Prof. Maria Leptin, chairs the Scientific Council, ensures its leadership and represents the ERC.
