ARCH-ENEMIES they might have been on the hallowed turf of Croke Park on a September Sunday in 1974, but since then, a wonderful bond of friendship has built up between the Galway and Dublin football teams from that era. The joys of sport and the ups-and-downs of life led to a special presentation of a cheque to Galway Hospice for €5,000 last month from the ‘Dublin ‘70s’ footballers, after they had heard a poignant personal story a couple of months previously, from the man who captained Galway in the ’74 final. Ten years ago today, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in territory controlled by Russian and Russia-led forces, taking the lives of 298 innocent people, including 80 children. A Joint Investigation Team in 2018 found that the aircraft was shot down by a Russian-made BUK surface-to-air missile fired from that territory, and that the missile launcher used to shoot down MH17 originated from the 53rd Anti-aircraft Brigade of the Russian Federation, stationed in Kursk, Russia. Our thoughts remain with those who perished, and we join with their friends, families, and loved ones in honoring their memory.…
In late spring, estuaries along the U.S. Gulf Coast come alive with newborn fish and other sea life. While some species have struggled to adjust to the region’s rising water temperatures in recent years, one is thriving: juvenile bull sharks. We study this iconic shark species, named for its stout body and matching disposition, along the Gulf of Mexico. Over the past two decades, we have documented a fivefold increase in baby bull sharks in Mobile Bay, Alabama, and a similar rise in several Texas estuaries, as our new study shows. Despite the bull shark’s fearsome reputation, baby bull sharks…
The Canadian government recently announced a new pilot program for in-home migrant care workers, starting in late 2024 or early 2025. This follows previous programs like the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilot projects (2019-24), the Caregiver Program (2014-19) and the Live-in Caregiver Program (1992-2014). The new initiative promises immediate permanent residency upon arrival, addressing calls from care workers to reduce instability from temporary work permits. However, it does little to address the thousands of pending permanent residence applications from current care workers experiencing stress and prolonged family separation. Lofty goal The federal government plans to admit…

A victory in the U.S. presidential election by Trump, who has signaled that he would draw back Washington’s aid to Ukraine, could force Berlin to reverse its decision. Even though the cabinet gave its blessing to the draft, a final budget remains far from the finish line. The bigger hurdle will be in parliament, where MPs from all three governing parties will have to hammer out the details by the end of the year. “The many promises of the chancellor and his defense minister to continue to support Ukraine are turning out to be hollow phrases,” Ingo Gädechens, a lawmaker…
