With the current buzz around artificial intelligence (AI), it would be easy to assume that it is a recent innovation. In fact, AI has been around in one form or another for more than 70 years. To understand the current generation of AI tools and where they might lead, it is helpful to understand how we got here. Each generation of AI tools can be seen as an improvement on those that went before, but none of the tools are headed toward consciousness. The mathematician and computing pioneer Alan Turing published an article in 1950 with the opening sentence: “I…

Commonly known as Australia’s “Easter bunny” due to its large ears and hopping movement, the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is the last of its kind. Today we published its reference genome – all 3.66 billion pieces of it. Published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, it is the largest marsupial genome to date. Not only is it bigger than the koala genome, it’s even bigger than that of humans. A genome is the entire set of DNA – the building blocks of life – holding the genetic code for what makes a species what it is. So, what is…

As forecast in pre-election polls, the first round of the French legislative election confirmed the New Popular Front, an alliance of the main parties on the left, as the second-biggest political force in the country. Hastily formed a day after French President Emmanuel Macron’s surprise decision to dissolve the National Assembly, the alliance consists of the France Unbowed party, the Socialists, the Greens and the Communists. The left-wing alliance made a strong showing, with around 28 percent of the vote, but is unlikely to land enough seats in the runoffs to form a majority in parliament. That didn’t stop a…

Grassy box gum woodlands once covered millions of square kilometres in southeastern Australia, but today less than 5% remains. The loss of large old trees has been a crisis for the many species of birds and other animals that depend on them for habitat. Replacing this habitat is not easy. There is no quick way to create a centuries-old tree. One thing we can do is make artificial structures that mimic the features of large old trees in degraded environments where trees cannot live or are too young and small. We have been working with the Australian Capital Territory Parks…

When I tell people that I study fossils, many assume I am talking about dinosaurs or some equally impressive extinct creatures. But there’s far more to be found in the global fossil record, like plants, fish and insects. Researchers who study fossil insects preserved in rock or amber deposits are called palaeoentomologists – and I’m one of very few in the world. (I’d estimate there are roughly 200, many of them still studying towards PhDs and not yet working full-time.) I’m also the first and only black South African in the field. By studying the remains of fossil insects such…
