It’s a Saturday afternoon at a kids’ birthday party. Hordes of children are swarming between the spread of birthday treats and party games. Half-eaten cupcakes, biscuits and lollies litter the floor, and the kids seem to have gained superhuman speed and bounce-off-the-wall energy. But is sugar to blame? The belief that eating sugary foods and drinks leads to hyperactivity has steadfastly persisted for decades. And parents have curtailed their children’s intake accordingly. Balanced nutrition is critical during childhood. As a neuroscientist who has studied the negative effects of high sugar “junk food” diets on brain function, I can confidently say…
The Dubs had Kilkenny on the ropes in round four of the Leinster SHC before their three-point lead was overturned late on in Parnell Park, but Micheál Donoghue’s men were adamant history would not repeat itself against Galway.Dublin goalkeeper Seán Brennan felt their victory over the Tribesmen on Sunday was “probably a long time coming for this group” with their reward a Leinster final rematch against the Cats on Saturday week in Croke Park.“We probably learned a lot from the Kilkenny game, and maybe in a strange way, it probably gave us that bit of experience to actually see it…
Today, the European Commission hosted the fifth meeting of the High-Level Expert Group on Union Restrictive Measures. More than two years since Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, sanctions remain at the core of the EU’s response to this unprovoked military aggression. Following the adoption of thirteen far-reaching sanctions packages on Russia, the meeting focused on the persisting challenges associated with the enforcement and effectiveness of sanctions, in particular, circumvention of EU sanctions via third countries. The main goal of the meeting was to take stock of the progress made in combatting sanctions circumvention since the last high-level meeting in February. High-level…
France and Germany are at loggerheads on issues of budget and joint debt. The French president wants member states to take up new EU joint debt and make bold investment plans in the wake of fiercer competition from China and the U.S. Germany and the so-called frugal nations are reluctant to follow France’s lead. In Dresden, however, Macron appeared undeterred. “Europe needs a massive investment shock to meet its challenges,” he said. “Two times more joint public investment.” This should be done, he continued, either by doubling “the size of the budget, through common borrowing strategies or the instruments that…
Are drone strikes legitimate, meaning on sound moral and legal footing? How people perceive the legitimacy of U.S. drone strikes – firing missiles from remotely piloted aircraft at terrorist and insurgent leaders – is central to whether and how the government can continue to use them. The American public tends not to question military action it perceives as rightful, and U.S. policymakers often reference the legitimacy of U.S. drone strikes. The U.S. military, responsible for conducting most drone strikes globally, has also adopted legitimacy as a principle of counterterrorism operations. Yet what shapes perceptions of legitimate drone warfare, how these…
Royal Navy warship HMS Duncan has deployed from Portsmouth today to the Red Sea. The Type 45 destroyer will relieve its sister ship HMS Diamond, which has been protecting shipping lanes in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks since before Christmas. HMS Duncan is a like-for-like replacement for Diamond – armed with the same Sea Viper missile system and equipped with the same radar systems, which are able to accurately detect faraway threats. During her deployment, HMS Diamond has shot down nine drones and one missile, launched by Houthis from the coast of Yemen at cargo ships. The 200 men…

Located 163 light-years from Earth, a Jupiter-sized exoplanet named WASP-69b offers astrophysicists a window into the dynamic processes that shape planets across the galaxy. The star it orbits is baking and stripping away the planet’s atmosphere, and that escaped atmosphere is being sculpted by the star into a vast, cometlike tail at least 350,000 miles long. I’m an astrophysicist. My research team published a paper in the Astrophysical Journal describing how and why WASP-69b’s tail formed, and what its formation can illuminate about the other types of planets astronomers tend to detect outside of our solar system. Artist’s interpretation of…
