Geneva/ Saint Johns, 27 May – Well-managed migration is an essential part of how Small Island Developing States achieve resilient prosperity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on the eve of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda (27-30 May). The Conference will discuss the progress achieved towards sustainable development by the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Located 163 light-years from Earth, a Jupiter-sized exoplanet named WASP-69b offers astrophysicists a window into the dynamic processes that shape planets across the galaxy. The star it orbits is baking and stripping away the planet’s atmosphere, and that escaped atmosphere is being sculpted by the star into a vast, cometlike tail at least 350,000 miles long. I’m an astrophysicist. My research team published a paper in the Astrophysical Journal describing how and why WASP-69b’s tail formed, and what its formation can illuminate about the other types of planets astronomers tend to detect outside of our solar system. Artist’s interpretation of…
There’s a growing global movement to ensure that researchers can get access to the huge quantity of data assembled and exploited by digital operators. Momentum is mounting because it’s becoming increasingly evident that data is power. And access to it is the key – for a host of reasons, not least transparency, human rights and electoral integrity. But there’s currently a massive international asymmetry in access to data. In the European Union and the US, some progress has been made. For example, EU researchers studying risks have a legal right of access. In the US too, some companies have taken…
Allied Pilots Association spokesman Capt. Dennis Tajer joins ‘Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street’ to discuss growing flight safety concerns. Twelve people have been left injured after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin, Ireland hit an area of turbulence, with one passenger describing it as the “worst 15 seconds of my life.” Dublin Airport said in a statement that Qatar Airways flight QR017 – a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner – managed to land safely around midday Sunday. “Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Rescue department, due to 6 passengers and 6 crew…
PORTLAND, OR – After a two-day bench trial, the U.S. Department of Labor obtained a federal court judgment that orders the U.S. Postal Service to pay $141,307 in lost wages and damages for emotional distress suffered to a probationary mail carrier who the agency fired after they reported an on-the-job injury to their supervisor and filed an accident report. Judge Adrienne Nelson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon found USPS discriminated against and wrongfully terminated the employee 21 days after the worker reported that they suffered a leg injury near the end of their shift as they unloaded mail…
Incumbent Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda will return for a second five-year term after winning an election runoff on Sunday. Security concerns dominated the campaign, as Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to wage a campaign of destabilization against the Baltic countries. Nausėda has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, as it seeks to fend off the Kremlin’s ongoing full-scale invasion. Nausėda, who ran as an independent, won 74.4 percent of the vote, defeating his challenger, the current Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė. Source link
Google has rolled out its latest experimental search feature on Chrome, Firefox and the Google app browser to hundreds of millions of users. “AI Overviews” saves you clicking on links by using generative AI — the same technology that powers rival product ChatGPT — to provide summaries of the search results. Ask “how to keep bananas fresh for longer” and it uses AI to generate a useful summary of tips such as storing them in a cool, dark place and away from other fruits like apples. But ask it a left-field question and the results can be disastrous, or even…
The Act will give the UK’s competition regulator tools to stop technology businesses with strategic power from misusing their position to disadvantage competitors and consumers. The law will also create penalties for traders that break consumer protection law and allowing the Competition and Markets Authority to enforce consumer law directly. Under the rules, it will be easier for consumers to manage subscriptions by providing clearer pricing, banning fake reviews, and giving consumers greater control over what they are purchasing online. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act has become law after receiving Royal Assent. The Act paves the way to…
On behalf of the United States of America, I wish the people of Georgia a happy Independence Day. We have been proud to support efforts to strengthen Georgia’s economy, democracy, and ability to deter Russian aggression, and we reaffirm our commitment to the Georgian people and to Georgia’s future. It has been an important twelve months for the people of Georgia, including Georgia’s historic achievement of European Union…
The Southern Ocean, a region critical to Earth’s climate, hosts vast blooms of microscopic ocean plants known as phytoplankton. They form the very basis of the Antarctic food web. Using a fleet of robotic floats, our study published in Nature today reveals that windblown dust delivers enough iron to support a third of the Southern Ocean’s phytoplankton growth. Knowing this will help us understand how global warming will affect key climate processes phytoplankton are involved in. The Southern Ocean acts as a climate “shock absorber”. Its cold waters and vast area capture up to 40% of human-generated carbon dioxide (CO₂)…
