On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Iceland as you celebrate your National Day. If you type the term “password cyberattack” into Google News, the results will show just how often cyber criminals are getting hold of important data belonging to companies and individuals. Thembekile Mayayise is a cybersecurity professional and researcher. The Conversation Africa asked her to outline how employers and employees can improve their password safety. During his visit to the Adelaide Zoo on Sunday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced that two “equally beautiful, lively, cute, and younger” pandas would be given to Australia to replace Wang Wang and Fu Ni, who will return to China later this year after calling Adelaide home for 15 years. The gifting of pandas to other countries has long been a part of Chinese diplomacy. But what exactly is this unique approach to Chinese soft power? Why does it work? And will it profoundly impact Australia-China relations now? China’s panda diplomacy from Mao to now Panda diplomacy by the People’s…

“This summit is a tremendous success,” U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan declared in a speech on Sunday. “You’ve managed to gather the whole world.” Sullivan and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris represented Washington at the summit, as President Joe Biden skipped the conference due to campaign events. The summit kept the details vague in terms of deadlines and plans for the next meetings. “Peace will be a journey,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “These were not peace negotiations, because Putin is not serious about ending the war. He is insisting on capitulation. No country would ever…
Neanderthals, the closest cousins of modern humans, lived in parts of Europe and Asia until their extinction some 30,000 years ago. Genetic studies are revealing ever more about the links between modern humans and these long-gone relatives – most recently that a rush of interbreeding between our species occurred in a relatively short burst of time around 47,000 years ago. But one mystery still remains. The Homo sapiens genome today contains a little bit of Neanderthal DNA. These genetic traces come from almost every part of the Neanderthal genome – except the Y sex chromosome, which is responsible for making…
Thank you President Amherd, President Zelenskyy. Colleagues, Russia chose to wage war on Ukraine, and we come here united because we choose peace. Peace based on the foundational principles of the United Nations Charter. The Ukrainian people did not ask for this fight. But, in defending their country, their valour and their sacrifice has been truly humbling to witness. It is a cruel paradox… …that the things that make life worth living… …are also the things for which brave men and women are prepared to die. For family. For freedom. For the ability to shape one’s own future. We salute…
Last week, the United States Government participated in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, Germany. The conference convened over 1,500 representatives from governments, businesses, and civil society to mobilize support for the recovery, reconstruction, reform, and modernization of Ukraine. That includes notifying Congress of our intent to support Ukraine with $500 million in new energy assistance and pivoting $324 million from our previously announced other energy assistance to meet Ukraine’s most urgent needs. This will bring the overall U.S. commitment to Ukraine’s energy system to approximately $1.5 billion since 2022. $50 million first-of-its-kind war-risk reinsurance facility in…
Two athletes square off for an intense dance battle. The DJ starts spinning tunes, and the athletes begin twisting, spinning and seemingly defying gravity, respectfully watching each other and taking turns showing off their skill. The athletes converse through their movements, speaking through a dance that celebrates both athleticism and creativity. While the athletes probably aren’t consciously thinking about the physics behind their movements, these complex and mesmerizing dances demonstrate a variety of different scientific principles. Breaking, also known as breakdancing, originated in the late 1970s in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Debuting as an Olympic sport…
