The Office of Global Partnerships at the U.S. Department of State, Concordia, and the University of Virginia Darden School’s Institute for Business in Society are pleased to announce the five finalists for the 2024 P3 Impact Award. Now in its 11th year, the P3 Impact Award recognizes exemplary public-private partnerships (P3s) that provide solutions to pressing global issues such as improving access to education, ecological sustainability, women’s economic empowerment, and humanitarian assistance. Special Representative for Global Partnerships Dorothy McAuliffe will announce the P3 Impact winner on Tuesday September 23, 2024, at 9:15 a.m. at the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit in New York City. An independent and diverse judging committee selected the following five finalists for the 2024 P3 Impact Award based on the operational structure, measurable social-inclusion impact, financial sustainability, innovation, and scalability of the partnerships:
Youth Empowered – Romania
Youth Empowered exemplifies the transformative potential of public-private-civil society partnerships by supporting Romanian teenagers and young adults (aged 16 to 25 years old) to complete their education and secure jobs. The Youth Empowered partnership bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world employment, drawing from grassroots expertise of Romanian nongovernmental organization, The Social Incubator, Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company’s extensive ecosystem, and institutional support from Romania’s educational and labor authorities. Since 2017, the partnership has empowered over 41,000 young Romanians to harness their talents, pursue their passions and build meaningful careers.
Plastic with Purpose: Creating a Sustainable Circular Economy for Plastic Waste in Vietnam – Vietnam
Plastic with Purpose (PwP) is a public-private partnership bringing together iDE, Oceanworks, and ReForm Plastics with the purpose of developing profitable and ecologically sustainable business models in the coastal city of Da Nang, Vietnam. The program aims to improve the lives and livelihoods of small-scale, informal waste-workers, most of whom are women. This unique partnership is catalyzed by the Danida Market Development Program (DMDP) with the intention of improving the collection, recycling, and repurposing of ocean-bound plastics in Vietnam. Through this partnership, organizations in the United States and Vietnam work together to leverage outcome-based financing by strengthening and incentivizing local waste collection supply chains and integrating them into a digital platform that is transparent and traceable.
Take the Lead – Global
Take The Lead is an initiative developed in collaboration with Mexoxo (Greece), eCornell University, the L’Oréal Fund for Women, and over thirty-six local stakeholders. The initiative is dedicated to democratizing education for 300,000 underserved women across 155 countries. Take The Lead aims to extend educational access to five million women in underserved environments globally in the future. The initiative is committed to enhancing the scalability of its efforts and further democratizing access to top-tier educational content, ensuring that an increasing number of women can benefit from this vision.
Public-Private Partnership to Improve Professional Education in Ukraine (EdUP) – Ukraine
Swisscontact has joined forces with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Geberit Trading LLC, and Sika Ukraine LLC in the Public-Private Partnership to Improve Professional Education in Ukraine (EdUP) to transform vocational education and training (VET) in Ukraine. With additional support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the EdUP initiative addresses the profound impact the war has had on the country’s economy and on its education system. EdUP restores the infrastructure of VET schools in the frontline regions and builds underground shelters for learning and to seek refuge. The initiative also establishes a dual education model that involves the private sector in the development and delivery of technical training in six construction professions that are crucial for the reconstruction of Ukraine. As a result, the future workforce in Ukraine is equipped with essential skills to advance the recovery of the country and benefits from greater employment opportunities.
The Challenge Initiative – Africa, Asia
The Challenge Initiative (TCI) offers a unique approach to financing, scaling up and sustaining family planning programs designed to address the rapid urbanization taking place in Africa and Asia. TCI has engaged more than 200 city governments across 13 countries to implement high-impact family planning practices and other interventions that rapidly scale access to family planning information and services. Led by Johns Hopkins’ William H. Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, with support from Bayer AG and the Gates Foundation, TCI works through six regional hubs in East Africa, Francophone West Africa, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines. Since launching in 2016, TCI has contributed to an additional 4.5 million family planning users in 213 cities across 13 countries – Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, India, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda – covering a total population footprint of 244 million.
